Living Systems Community Model

Launching

December 2023

Our social impact programs are guided by the principles of Beauty, Goodness, and Truth. We believe these three universal ideals of humanity represent the cornerstones of our social realities.

Our first campaign focuses on Beauty and how AI art can be tuned to create beauty and enhance the sense of community. We believe that through responsible community-based stewardship AI platforms can also help to enhance Truth and Goodness in our communities.

Campaign Overview

The Beauty of Community campaign uses AI to showcase Harlem's vibrant culture. Local residents and visitors help to tell the neighborhood's story through generative art while learning new skills!

How It Works

  • Visit our website and create art based on the theme of the day
  • Use the provided tools to generate art incorporating Harlem's essence
  • Upload submissions to be displayed locally and online
  • Winning entries chosen by community votes are minted into NFTs
  • Add your art to products in our merch marketplace

Get Involved

  • Youth programs at local schools incorporate the contest into art classes
  • Community centers host virtual workshops and gallery events
  • Cultural institutions provide mentoring and showcase space
  • Follow along on social media with live demos and progress

What's Next

The campaign will continue evolving:

  • Advanced workshops on new AI capabilities
  • Integration into afterschool programs and summer camps
  • Opportunities for peer learning and leadership
  • Showcases at local events and festivals
  • Collaborative AI artworks bringing our history to life

Join us as we use technology to unlock creativity inspired by Harlem and Uptown's rich heritage!

Inspire creativity and innovation

Campaign #1

The Beauty of Community

The first Generative Art Collection to be offered in support of the development of the Imagine Harlem Living Systems Community Platform.

The Beauty of Community campaign motivates participants to explore and express their own neighborhoods while learning and enhancing skills through the creation of digital photography, the use of AI-art generation, and Web3 technology.

Harlem and the Bronx are considered the birthplaces of hip-hop. Hip-hop culture has continued to evolve and grow in Harlem, and it remains an important part of the neighborhood's culture to this day. Many famous hip-hop artists, such as Nas, Jay-Z, and Cam'ron, have roots in Harlem and continue to represent the neighborhood in their music.

Digital art can be compared to remix culture in many ways. Both digital art and remix culture involve taking existing materials and transforming them into something new and unique. This can include elements of visual arts, music, film, and other forms of media. Both digital art and remix culture also often involve the use of technology and the sharing and distribution of new works through digital channels. By encouraging and supporting the creation of digital art in the Harlem NYC community, the program will help foster creativity, expression, and critical thinking skills in the next generation.

Impact

Technology Engagment Ecosystem

The campaign will engage and motivate residents, visitors, and tourists to:

  • Create art!

  • Explore the neighborhood and its history

  • Learn prompt engineering skills

  • Make new friends

  • Explore evolving technologies

  • Explore creating AI artwork

  • Earn rewards

  • Design products and sell them

Holonic Approch

"The Beauty of Community" will be the first community activation program of the Holon City community framework.

Through this program, we will demonstrate how AI can be uniquely tuned to create beauty and enhance community life.

The Systems Innovation approach using holons is a unique and innovative method of improving governance and resilience. Holons are systems that combine both organizational and individual elements, allowing for the creation, maintenance, and management of complex structures within cities.

By utilizing a holon-based system, city leaders can create an environment where citizens have more control over their lives while still being part of a larger governing structure. This approach allows for better decision-making processes on local issues as well as increased public participation in government decisions. Additionally, it provides opportunities to foster creativity among citizens by encouraging collaboration between different organizations or individuals working towards common goals.

Here are some technical steps that could help make AI image generation systems like Stable Diffusion less biased and more inclusive in a community-based framework:

Training Data:

  • Actively source training images that represent the diversity of the community accurately and proportionally. Seek out underrepresented groups.
  • Crowdsource image datasets directly from community members to improve representation.
  • Weight the sampling of training data to favor underrepresented classes and correct imbalances.
  • Remove outright offensive training content that promotes stereotypes.

Data Augmentation:

  • Use techniques like style and attribute mixing to synthesize additional diverse training examples missing from the original dataset.
  • Apply image translations to populate different skin tones, ages, genders, etc missing in the data.

Model Architecture:

  • Employ techniques like adversarial debiasing which penalize the model for learning unwanted biases during training.
  • Explore federated learning to train models on decentralized data while preserving privacy. This facilitates community-based data sharing.

Prompt Engineering:

  • Co-design prompt templates with community members that frame concepts positively and avoid tropes.
  • Have focus groups review generated outputs and refine prompts to mitigate observed biases.

Model Testing:

  • Establish a bias testing dataset that proactively checks for skewed or offensive outputs before deployment.
  • Create an ethics review panel with diverse community stakeholders to flag issues missed by automated testing.

Feedback Mechanics:

  • Build reporting tools for bad outputs that community members can use to further improve the model.
  • Continuously update training data and fine-tune models as diverse community input helps identify remaining flaws.

By centering community participation, bias mitigation, and thoughtful testing in the model development and deployment process, generative AI can be steered towards more inclusive and empowering representations aligned with the public's values.
